IKEA & Niinivirta: Green combination in Finland

Furniture giant Ikea begins experimenting with transporting zero-emission furniture to Finland. The experiment begins in Tampere. IKEA says it will begin testing in the Tampere region with the first electric truck in the Nordic countries in early October. The truck that began piloting was the first of its size in the Nordic countries to arrive in Finland, Ikea says. Emission-free home delivery is already being tested in five major cities, such as Shanghai and London, says Jessica Lehtinen, Business Manager at Ikea Finland.

According to Ikea, this is a DAF / Emoss electric truck owned by the Italian company NIINIVIRTA TRANSPORT, an authentic pioneer in the world of 100% electric transport of goods in Italy and Europe. The use of electric cars for domestic transport is expected to be extended to other parts of Finland. Starting in the autumn, renewable diesel will gradually be introduced in domestic transport in the Helsinki and Raisio area. According to the Swedish giant, renewable diesel achieves around 90 percent fewer emissions than conventional diesel.

Vesa Haapalahti, Ikea’s area manager in Tampere, says the products can be delivered home within the same day. In turn, Ikea’s staff are driven by biogas cars. The biogas is processed from the food waste of the company’s restaurants. There are five Ikea department stores in Finland: Espoo, Vantaa, Raisio, Tampere and Kuopio, as well as a local outlet in Jyväskylä.
